United Methodist Church
New Saturday worship service is “On THE WAY” beginning April 7
Over a year ago, Strongsville United Methodist Church had a vision for something new and different as they worked through a time of Strategic Spiritual Planning. In the last several months we have seen plans begin to move forward with the visions which this congregation perceived. A result was the formation of a Contemporary Worship Team.
The Pictorial Directory will be distributed the first three Sundays in March (4, 11 & 18) in the atrium. Each family having a picture in the directory will receive one copy of the directory. You are encouraged to pick up your directory to eliminate the cost of mailing it to your home.
Families who
do not have pictures in the directory
Those families who did not have their picture in the directory may also receive a copy of the directory. Since Olan Mills is charging the church for these additional directories, you may receive a directory for $3.00 on these same dates, March 4, 11 and 18.
If you have any questions, please call pictorial directory coordinator, Marge Turek, at 440-846-7400.

Friends,
Today I would like to share with you an entry from my personal journal. My
prayer is for God our Father to use this to touch you where you are in life.
With Christ’s love and blessings,
Pastor Paula
Journal
entry 2-8-01
Scott Peck in The Road Less Traveled
opens with this line, “Life is difficult.” I remember this
particular sentence because it was the opening line of the sermon presented at
our wedding. On that day, I remember considering how true it was, even as
I stood with David on June 24th as we were married. You see each of us had already experienced
situations in our lives which made the statement so real in many ways to both
of us. As I write today in my journal I am confronted by this fact in a
unique way.
You see, David and I are to be in Arizona but
because of an accident, I am sitting here at home being the second hand for my
husband who has a splint on his left hand which immobilizes two fractured
fingers. In one instant we were heading for Southwest General Health
Center, when we should have been on our way to the Cleveland Airport. In a
split second life changed. And we were faced with the uncertainty of
the use David would have of those fingers to play the keyboard or use the
computer. What should have been, was not, and now we look for the grace
of God in this day.
During this time a wise friend reminded me of an important fact,
saying; “In the midst of this particular ‘storm’ in your lives, you are right
where you need to be.” Remember the disciples who were out fishing when a
storm suddenly came up. They were where they needed to be and Jesus was
right there with them. Sure, we would rather be learning and worshiping
with others in Arizona, but we are here. We are here and Jesus is here
with us. And we are learning about our God as he uses this situation in
our lives.
I agree with Scott Peck, ”Life is
difficult,” but it is held in the hands of a loving, compassionate God!
Father, hold onto us as we go through this
time. Let us find rest and strength in the comfort of your presence. In
Jesus’ name, Amen.

Friday Fellowship has donated two inspiring books to the Rustad Library. Given in memory of Martha Ballas, She Who Laughs, Lasts is a collection of humorous stories by women of faith such as Barbara Johnson, Patsy Clairmont, Liz Curtis Higgs, and others. These stories inspire women, strengthen souls, and generate giggles.
The Red Tent, written by Anita Diamont and given in memory of Faye Brown, is the story of Dinah, Jacob’s only daughter and Joseph’s best friend. Dinah’s life story is dramatic and inspiring. She was a remarkable woman whose self-willed character made her a powerful role model in her time.
Friday Fellowship has also purchased a memorial book in the name of Howard Barkfelt. The God Catchers by Tommy Tenney is a fascinating read. “We are at that stage of wonderful misery when we know something is coming, but we don't know when or how it will arrive.” You can find this book in the new books section of the library. Thank you, Friday Fellowship!
We have reserved Albion Woods in Metroparks for FRIDAY, March 23 for our chili supper. Please note this is a Friday. We plan to eat at 6:30 pm. Cost will be $6.00. . .AND. . .we will have entertainment following our meal!
Have your reservation and money to Betty Smith by March 18. Plan to join us! Sometimers is open to all adults – singles and/or couples. Hope to see you March 23.
MARCH 17 – M-in-M's will meet in the vestibule of the auditorium at Strongsville High School at 7:00 to see the Sixth Follies, being sponsored by Women's League. Show time is at 7:30. If you're new to the community, Follies is a big production revue coordinated by a paid director from NY. Comedy skits, songs and dance numbers all feature local talent. Come join your friends to watch the most talked about event in Strongsville.
Afterwards, we will be going the Dublo's home for some tasty desserts.
Tickets are $10.00 each, and there are still a few left. Call Betty Rahm at 238-8636 to secure yours now.
Thank you!
In our last issue we thanked persons who helped clear the church’s roofs and sidewalks of snow. To that list we would like to add the name of Tom Verbsky. Your hard work is greatly appreciated!

The preparatory time with the Confirmation class is speeding by! The weekend retreat is drawing near. This time away from the usual routine provides the opportunity for these young people to focus on God and His plan for life and living.
The theme for the retreat is Decisions!
Decisions! Discussion sessions
focus on decision-making in general with emphasis on God’s Word in the Bible as
the source of guidance and truth. Other
topics include family and school responsibilities, types of entertainment, and
maintaining healthy bodies. We are
greatly blessed with caring adults who offer their time to chaperone, to lead
discussions, and to participate in a challenging question and answer session.
Ultimately the young people are made aware of the most important decision they will ever make. That decision is whether or not they will become followers of Jesus Christ and live their lives accordingly.
The following verses from the Letter to the Romans written by the apostle Paul provide the fundamental principles which people need to understand and accept as they make their decision for Christ:
“Yes, all have sinned; all fall short of God’s glorious ideal.” Romans 3:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23
“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” Romans 5:8
“For salvation that comes from trusting Christ—which is what we preach—is already within easy reach of each of us: in fact, it is as near as our own hearts and mouths. For if you tell others with your own mouth that Jesus Christ is your Lord, and believe in your own heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in his heart that a man becomes right with God; and with his mouth he tells others of his faith, confirming his salvation.” Romans 10:8-10
The Herricks wish to express a heartfelt thank you to those who have been praying for us during our recent times of difficulty. We also want to offer a special thanks to those who have given a tangible gift. We want to acknowledge your generosity. It means more to us than we can express in words.

Would you like to run away from home for a day? Have we got a treat for you!
Rev. Meredith Coleman, the “Minister of Joy,” is going to lead us in soothing our souls, refreshing our hearts, and helping us find new joy in Christianity at our celebration of spring and renewal as we take time out for a Tranquility Day.

When things seem different and confusing, maybe it would help to consult God. As you encounter a turn in the road which you haven’t experienced before, consider turning to a STEPHEN MINISTER.
A Stephen Minister has been trained as a lay volunteer in confidentiality and listening. YOUR Stephen Minister is regularly supervised to insure quality care and above all else is ready to offer God’s love through a one-to-one caring relationship.
For more information or to get help, contact Rev. Ron, Pastor Paula, Bev. Wells (572-1415), Mark or Karen Milia (572-0602), Hildi Fitzpatrick (572-5004) or Jim Boyer (572-4976).
Blood Drive is a big success!
First a great big thanks to everyone who participated in our American Red Cross blood drive on February 17. We collected 43 pints of blood, surpassing our goal of 35. Due to the success of our drive, we are planning another in October.
Special thanks to those volunteers who helped out on the day
of the drive: Paul Ziman, Bev

refreshments for our donors to enjoy: Janie
Jasko, Vickie Ladesic, Sue Mowry, Pam Johnson, and Bev Bogacki.
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Cancer developing in the colon or rectum is the third most common cause of cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates 130,200 new cases of colorectal cancer with 56,300 deaths this year. The 5-year survival rate is 90% if found and treated in an early stage before it has spread but unfortunately only 37% are found at this early stage.
Risk factors include personal or family history of colorectal cancer or polyps and inflammatory bowel disease. Other possible risks may include physical inactivity, high fat and/or low fiber diets, as well as inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables. Recent studies suggest estrogen replacement therapy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin may reduce the risk.
Any signs of rectal bleeding, blood in the stool, or change in bowel habits should alert you to a potential problem and send you seeking medical advice. Screening for colorectal cancers should begin at age 50 for all men and women and earlier for those at highest risk. The American Cancer Society has a very informative website for many types of cancer and treatment at www.cancer.org.
Our monthly blood pressure screening is Sunday, March 25 in the parlor after each service. Hope to see you there!
May God bless you during this Lenten season!

From the Pastor's study
“Equal and Unequal”
A riddle goes like
this: “What is it that God never sees, that
a king seldom sees, that we see every day?”
Have you discerned
the answer? Well, the right answer is one I would have had difficulty
discovering. The answer is - “An equal.”
Indeed, there is no
God but one God; there are few kings; but daily you and I see our peers, our
equals. How appropriate it is that this riddle can be used within the context
of the church, for we are told that we all come equally into the life of a
congregation. The church is the only institution that requires one to be a
sinner in order to be admitted to membership. We are reminded that all of us
are unable to fulfill what God asks of us in our journey of faith. Far too
often, we allow our own decisions to lead us away from trusting in God.
Therefore, we come to worship as equals.
It’s important for
us to remember that all of us fall short of God’s desire. This is why we
acknowledge that no one is better than the other. Everyone who comes to church
- no matter what their income, their attire, their background, their status -
everyone comes as equal in the eyes of the Almighty. All of us are the
recipients of God’s grace. All of us stand in need of God’s mercy and
forgiveness. We are equal.
Yet there is also a
sense in which none of us is equal for we bring to the church our differences.
This is why, on one Sunday, someone may like the sermon or the anthem while the
person next to them may leave uninspired. One person may think that the children’s
sermon was the highlight while another may find the time of prayer to be the
most meaningful. We bring our differences with us into worship and the life of
the church. We can be thankful that we are not copies of one another. Because
of our individual gifts, we are able to share a uniqueness with each other.
Our work within the
church points out our differences as well as our equalities. We are equalized
by the presence of Jesus Christ - none of us being better than the other. Yet,
because of the creative gifts that God has granted to us, we are different. We
come together as equals and unequals. We come together needing God’s love and
rejoicing in our differences. It is God, in Jesus Christ, who brings us
together and is the reason for our existence.
We give thanks to
God for that which makes us equal and that which makes us different. Because of
the love of God seen through Jesus Christ, we are loved. We are loved because
of our differences. We are loved because we are the same.
Lord, we give you
thanks that we all come before you as sinners. We give you thanks that we have
our own unique characteristics that make us different from one another. Amen.

Pampered
Chef Party
Pampered Chef is “the kitchen store that comes to your door.” Many have
attended Pampered Chef parties in homes, but a unique opportunity to purchase
the high quality kitchen utensils and tools (that range from simple vegetable
peelers to professional grade cookware) will be available at the church on
Sundays, March 11th and 18th.
Through an arrangement with Pampered Chef, the Capital Funds Campaign
will receive a part of the profits from the total sales. A table will be in the
atrium on those two Sundays, where items can be ordered. This is another way in
which people are creatively aiding the Capital Funds Campaign. We give thanks
to Joan Koenig, Kitchen Consultant, who has arranged this agreement with
Pampered Chef. If you need a kitchen item, stop by and see what is available.
Something
to Think About
by
Greg
“Am
I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God?
Or
am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please
men,
I would not be a servant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10
I’m
only now beginning to understand this verse. I’m only now beginning to
implement it into my daily life. I’m only now beginning to ask this question
before everything I do in this ministry.
My
first 11 months at Strongsville United Methodist Church have been absolutely
wonderful. I’ve received an abundance of support, love and encouragement.
Sometimes, the best time to take an honest account of how you’re doing is when
you think you need it least. This month, that is exactly what I’ll be doing.
This
is a relational ministry, yet sometimes I feel that I am wrapping myself in
busyness instead of tending to a soul that needs tending to. The other day I
was caught up in the usual whirlwind of “getting things done” when a youth
walked into my office and needed to talk. You must understand that the things I
was working on ”getting done” were very important, and very quickly approaching
a deadline. I sat at my desk bewildered by the situation, so I prayed about it.
I got the answer in the form of a verse, Galatians 1:10. If Jesus was sitting
right here beside me, and a hurting child walked into my office, but I had a
million other “important” things that absolutely “needed” to get done, what
would he do; turn the child away and try to catch up later, or drop everything,
turn deaf ears to the world and listen? I heard a graphic illustration of a
similar situation in a message recently. By turning that child away, I would
literally be saying, ...”go to hell, I don’t have time for you.” Ouch! I never
thought of it that way.
So,
now we start round 2, my second year. Though the first has been full of
successes, it’s also allowed me to see areas of much needed improvement. There
are hundreds of great “programs” out there that land on my desk every day, I
think youth directors feel a lot of pressure (either from someone in the
congregation or from some mass mailing we receive) to jump at every program
opportunity we get because it “looks good to be busy,” but God calls us to be
picky. I think we need to ask ourselves, “Am I now trying to win the approval
of men, or of God?”
